Super Bowl winning coach and author Tony Dungy said, “You can’t always control circumstances. However, you can control your attitude, approach, and response.” One of my favoirte quotes is, “Everday when you wake up you have two choices: be happy or be really happy.”

No matter what circumstance you are facing, you control how you respond. You might not deserve what is happening to you and chances are it’s just not fair but as best selling author Jon Gordon writes, “Are you going to be the hero or the victum in your own story?”

Tim Kight is the Chief Executive Officer of Focus 3, which focuses on helping organizations align the power of leaders culture and behavior to achieve results. He famously works with The Ohio State Football Team. Through listening to his podcast, “Focus 3 Podcast” and reading Coach Urban Meyers book, “Above The Line” his message of E+R=O has been a huge influence on my life.

E=Event. We cannot always control what happens to us.

R=Response. We control how we respond to the circumstance.

O=Outcome. How we Respond to the Event determines the Outcome.

One of my favorite examples of someone who has changed the world through his R is former National Championship winning coach Jim Valvano. He was dealt one of the worst hands life can deal…cancer (E). Instead of feeling sorry for himself (which no would have blamed him for) he started The V foundation (R) which to date has raised $170 million to cancer research (O).

E+R=O
