What was your latest post on Instagram? Chances are it was something you did or something you have. Sharing ones happiness/blessings with the world is not a crime, however we often act as if we are responsible for the great things we have in life.
In life, there are no lottery winners. I am a firm believer that all that you are and everything you have is the by-product of what someone else did for you.
There was a time when LeBron James didn’t know how to dribble a basketball or when Walt Disney didn’t know how to draw. Someone taught them how to do these things. Legendary head football coach Lou Holtz said it best, “anytime I get the urge to pat myself on the back for something, I think about what the members of my family did to give me a chance at a better life. Everyone has someone to thank for what he or she has, and every time you see a successful person, you should think about the people in that person’s life who made sacrifices for his or her success.”
Sure someone helped us, but aren’t WE the ones who put the work in? Aren’t WE the ones who faced adversity and kept pushing? Aren’t WE the ones who had the discipline required to achieve our goals? While someone may have introduced us to a certain skill/trait WE are the ones who accomplished something great. In fact, some of us may have achieved something in spite of others. In circumstances such as these it’s easy to say, “I did it on my own.” If not observed and learned firsthand through an external source (parent, teacher, coach, etc.), where did we acquire our talents/character from?
The Bible says, “Every good gift and perfect gift is from above.”-James 1-:17 Everything I have is a direct result of the grace of Jesus Christ and what he did for me. Even though I don’t deserve it, he put amazing people in my life who taught me how to do certain tasks and also blessed me with the natural ability to perform them. He has done the same for you. Make sure to give credit where credit is due.
